Psychiatric Registered Nurse (RN) – Job Summary
Shift: 12-Hour Days | Every Other Weekend | First to Float
Setting: Acute Care – Inpatient Child/Adolescent & Adult Psychiatry
Guaranteed Hours: 36/week
Contract Length: 13 Weeks
Charting: EPIC
Certifications Required: BLS, CHI Health Workplace Violence Prevention (CPI preferred)
BSN Required: No
Trauma Level: II Position Overview

The Psychiatric Registered Nurse (RN) provides high-quality, patient-centered mental health care within a locked inpatient behavioral health unit serving both adolescents and adults. Nurses play a hands-on role in therapeutic engagement, safety monitoring, crisis intervention, and collaboration with a multidisciplinary team. This is the region’s only child/adolescent inpatient psychiatric unit.

Unit Details

• Licensed Beds: 25
• Current Utilization: 3 Adult Beds, 6 Adolescent Beds
• Nurse:Patient Ratios:
  • Adult: 3:1 , may increase up to 7 patients
  • Adolescent: 6:1
• Typical Diagnoses:
  • Depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder
  • Psychosis, schizophrenia
  • Substance use disorders (ETOH, polysubstance)
  • Behavioral and personality disorders
  • Rare opioid withdrawal (medically cleared)
• IVs: Very rare; experience not required

Required & Preferred Experience

Must Have:

• Acute inpatient psych or state hospital experience
• Strong communication, de-escalation, and behavioral crisis management skills

Preferred:

• Adolescent psych experience
• CPI certification

Support Staff & Resources

• Mental Health Techs/Aides (typically 2 when census reaches 9)
• Occupational Therapy & OT Assistant (M–F)
• Social Work
• Respiratory Therapy in-house (CPAP/BiPAP & oxygen support)
• Hospital security, emergency buttons (Code Blue/Yellow)
• No telemetry monitoring required

Unit Practices & Safety

• Locked unit – 4th floor
• Mechanical restraints & seclusion used rarely
• Nurses actively assist with 15-minute safety rounds
• Travelers are not expected to take charge roles

Scheduling & Requirements

• Shifts: 7a–7p (primary), 7p–7a, and 8-hr shifts depending on staffing
• Self-scheduling with seniority priority (union environment)
• Weekend: Every other
• Holidays: Every other
• Floating: Throughout hospital as helping hands or 1:1
• Call: None
• Orientation: 2 × 12-hour shifts

Dress Code

• Any scrub color except maroon
• Business casual acceptable
